The lid lift pedal for the 240-litre wheelie bin is the standard-compliant solution for disposing of rubbish in public catering. The use of hands to lift the lid is not permitted when working in contact with food, a sector in which it is essential to maintain a correct level of hygiene. In fact, according to the HACCP standards it is mandatory to keep your hands free when throwing waste. The pedal responds to this need as it is composed of a non-slip part in pressed sheet metal and a rod to lift the lid.
The HACCP system requires that in order to comply with health and hygiene standards and guarantee food safety in restaurants, pizzerias and, in general, in all public catering, the lid lifter pedal is mandatory. The presence of this pedal means you don't have to use your hands to open the bins, which is essential for maintaining the correct level of hygiene when working in contact with food.
Further regulations come from the D.L. 155 of 1997 and subsequently by the "hygiene package" of 2004 (EC regulations 852, 853, 854). These require "that empty packaging, in paper, plastic, glass, etc., be delivered to the public collection service through the special specialized bins, while the bins for separate waste collection must be made of washable material, of suitable dimensions, equipped with pedal-operated fixed lid, unless other methods are shown to be suitable."
